Uh oh! I know this post will be good and juicy!
The question is "Can single women and married women get along?"
As a single woman, I have caught sheer terror and hell from married women, particularly in the workplace. Here are some examples:
1. Married women love to emphasize what they do and where they go with their husbands. I'm a very private person and I believe that some things should be kept that way.
2. I was once a student teacher with an advising teacher, who knew I was single. This teacher always talked incessantly about her husband and her child to me and to her students. She would even bring him to work on teacher workdays, which I felt was inappropriate. After Valentine's Day, she informed me that her husband had asked her how I came to work after this glorious holiday and smirked. It was as if she were mocking me and laughing at the fact that I was single and had had no one to care about me. She even tried to hook me up with one of the custodial workers, an issue that I'll probably have to save for a different post. But I will say this: I truly was disgusted by the fact that she wanted to hook me up with this random guy just because we were both African Americans. How ignorant! I felt like this White woman, who was married to an Assistant Principal, was insulting me by saying that the best man for me would be a maintenance worker.
3. Along with the whole Valentine's Day thing, I had some crusty old white woman ask me if I had a Valentine for the holiday. I was so angry and enraged. I have a very bad temper, and I'm surprised I didn't slap her. All I remember saying to her was "NO!, do you???" After thinking about this years later, I should have said, "Yeah, I sure do, your husband, bitch!" Maybe that would have shut her old ass up. For you who are offended, please do not be. It's not my intention to be mean; I feel like others have been mean and insensitiveto me! Try to follow the logic: If I have a Valentine, great, but ultimately, it's none of your business; if I don't have anyone special in my life, then you have just emphasized that for me, dummy. I guess this old crusty white woman at Colfax Elementary School (Oops, didnt mean to put that in there, he he) hadn't thought that far ahead.
4. In a teacher's lunchroom, there was a teacher who had the audacity to pull up her shirt and show everyone her nasty ass, pregnant stomach. This was wrong on so many levels, I don't even know where to begin. I never revealed my body, so why would it be different for this cow? Second of all, we were supposed to be EATING! Enough said there. Why did I put this section here when it has nothing to do with marriage, because she also taught at the same school. Sorry, they gave me a fit there.
5. As a graduate student, one of my classes met at a restaurant. I had a former professor go around to each person, one by one, to see who was married. Before she could even get to me, I felt this burning inside because I was so angry. So when she said to me, "You're not married, are you?" I said, "No. Thanks for reminding me." I did not want to sound like the stereotypical Black woman, but I was so enraged. The WHOLE semester, all my classmates did was talk about their spouses or children, especially this fat Italian girl named Kat. Before I left this class, I knew more about her husband than I truly cared to know. Every other sentence was, "My husband always says..." I wanted to throw a chair at her HEAD!
I know I wrote a LOT and there's so much more I could say! Ultimately, I'm so disgusted and disgruntled by all of the extremely domestic women who have set us women back decades by only talking about their SPOUSES! GET OVER YOURSELF! NOT EVERYONE WANTS TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR LIFE, YOUR SEX LIFE, YOUR MARRIAGE, YOUR PROBLEMS, ETC.
I would love to hear from you women who've had similar experiences.
